Applying Mascara
Next to lipstick and simple make up tips , mascara will be your most effective makeup tool. It is a great eye opener giving emphasis to the lashes. As well as the obvious choice of make up air units, many brands promise to thicken, lengthen, darken, volumize and condition your lashes. They are also invariably available in waterproof and regular formulas.

It is extremely important to use a proper application technique when applying mascara which will allow you to achieve a finished look. Similarly, you must ensure that the mascara covers the lashes from the root to the tip of the lash.

To apply mascara to your upper lashes, wiggle the mascara wand back and forth at the base of the lashes to deposit color before rolling the brush through your lashes. Next, cover the lashes from the base to the tips with long full strokes. This method creates a thicker looking looking for lipsticks with the ends separated and the base well defined.

When applying mascara to lower lashes, hold the wand vertically and run it from side to side. When doing so be especially careful to avoid smudging under the waterproof make up .

More than one coat of mascara can be applied. However, combing through lashes between coats is preferable as this will help prevent clumping.

Mascara History
During the middle of the 1920s, mascara was available in the form of cake, tube, wax and liquid mascara and was applied using a mascara lash tints . Quite surprisingly, there were even waterproof formulations available.

Application Tips
  • Consider the different types of mascara and select one that is most suitable for your lashes and the occasion. There should be a choice of lengthening, thickening, long-wearing, conditioning and waterproof formulas, among others. For during the day, you might want to add length, while a night on the town may need a long-wearing or thickening formula.
  • Select a color. If you have blond or red lashes, choose a brown mascara. Darker-lashed women can opt for brown for a casual look, and black or brown-black for more prominant or dramatic lashes.
  • You can use an eyelash curler to curl your lashes, if desired, and apply all other eye makeup before your girls make up .
  • It is best to remove the wand from the tube in one pull. Pumping the mascara pushes air into the tube, causing it to dry out as well as introducing bacteria into it.
  • Use an eyelash comb to separate the wet make up air units. Also, if necessary, blot the lashes with tissue paper to remove any excess mascara.
  • It is best to use less mascara for the lower lashes. Begin where the lashes meet the edge of the lower eyelid, and stroke gently downward.
